Climate Communities is a national coalition of city and county leaders working for new federal resources, tools and incentives to support local government action to improve energy efficiency, promote renewable energy and curb greenhouse gas emissions. Climate Communities has already been successful in securing Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) funding through economic stimulus legislation, getting significant federal resources included for local government actions in proposed federal climate change legislation, supporting the new HUD-DOT-EPA Sustainable Communities initiative, and launching a $20 million “Climate Showcase Communities” grant program at the EPA.
County leadership needed NOW
2010 is a critical year. Local government leaders must urge Congress to (1) provide funding for EECBG, the Climate Showcase Communities program, the HUD-DOT-EPA Sustainable Communities initiative, and other important programs that support local clean energy and climate change action; (2) pass clean energy legislation that includes resources for local governments; and (3) shift resources in transportation reauthorization legislation from state highway projects to local transit and VMT reduction initiatives.
Join fellow county leaders on March 10 for “County Clean Energy Action Day on Capitol Hill.” Help us demonstrate to Congress the critical role of local governments in promoting green buildings, increasing public transit and cleaner vehicles and fuels, fostering community-scale renewables, building green infrastructure, and creating green jobs and businesses.
